Literature Text

Lana wasn't ordinary, everyone knew that. If they knew why she was this way, maybe they'd still think her strange…but then again, they could think quite the opposite. She never wanted to take that chance; she wouldn't even if she did want to. It was true, when she told them all that she never knew who her mother was, but Micheal being her father was a flat out lie. Like a father, yes. Blood relation…none whatsoever. But as long as people believed it, it worked fine for her.
She wasn't originally from America. When she was fifteen, she was allowed out of the one place she had called home. An orphanage in England known as Wammy's House. Each child there was exceptionally bright, but only one would be allowed to take on such important roles as gaining a letter. Lana grew up there, since she was a baby. She knew no other place she would ever take to. While there, she heard of the children and some adults there speak of a man named L, a super detective. She had heard he died and that N or Near had taken his place, known to the world still as L. She grew up, knowing the letter.
Throughout her childhood, she would always be seen reading, eating sugar, or staring off into space, her mind reeling on different thoughts. The way she sat or chewed her thumb while thinking was what started off the talking around Wammy's. She had once met N, only once. He had come to Wammy's, with a reason Lana hadn't paid attention to. She had been sitting in a chair, her legs pulled towards her, and had been stacking sugar cubes. She looked over when he entered, his white, curly hair a mess like her black hair. He looked so young, young enough that it actually shocked her when she found out later he was almost in his mid-forties.
He had sat beside her in another chair with one leg pulled towards him and his other hanging down. He curled a piece of his hair around his finger as he watched her. She stared blankly back into his eyes as she brought her thumb up and began chewing on it lightly. The action made him smile lightly, but only for a minute before he let it slip. "What's your name?' He asked, his voice monotone. "I just go by Lana." She said softly. "And you? What can I call you?" She asked. "I am N, or you may call me Near." He answered, looking at her sugar cubes and picking one off the top. "Careful, it's taken me a while to get it this high." She said blankly, picking up one more cube and gently setting it on the top. She then plucked out another one and set it in her mouth.
Near set it down and looked at her, at her messy black hair, her gray eyes, the black lines under her eyes and the slouch in her back as she sat. She reminds me of… He shook the thought from his head as he watched her. "So, you are Near, or L as most people know you? I actually thought you would look a little more…professional." She said as she continued to stack them. "Believe not what you hear." He replied, just watching her still. That was how the two had first met…she had been six.
He had kept tabs on her and on her improvement in Wammy's House. Then, he finally made his decision. Sitting in a room filled with TVs, Near stacked his dice and was instantly reminded of Lana. "Rodger?" An elder man came to him and stared at the albino man. "Yes Near, what is it?" He asked. "Take note of this Rodger, I wish Lana to take over the L name after my time is up." He explained blankly. "Lana? But she's still so young." "She will grow, wont she? I have faith in her abilities to be like L…she already is much like him." He stated, not taking his eyes off his dice. Rodger emitted a sigh before writing something down. "Very well. But, why do you say this now Near?" He had asked. The dice still piled in the small building as he focused on that. "Because, I will die soon and I know that. If I don't choose now, I never will…it will be Mello and I all over. But, as the years build, my death grows closer until," he set another dice but they fell apart and fell over the desk and rolled across the floor. "it all ends. And what happens when it ends?" He again began to build with the dice. "You start with a new and build the years again."
A few years later, Rodger died and in his place, Micheal was set. He had been watching Wammy's house after Rodger serves as Near's Watari. But only a few years after Rodger went that Near followed…Lana immediately took his place. But, still being so young, she talked Micheal into letting herself go to school. When he asked her why, she simply replied, "So my knowledge can grow." With a smile playing on her face.

Obviously, that was a lie since she automatically scored at the top of the classes but Micheal couldn't take her out at that time. Later that year, she met Richard as she was sitting and reading a mystery book in the library, her legs pulled to her chest. He had bumped into her while helping carry the books around. When he apologized, all she had said was, "Sorrys aren't needed, save them for when worse things happen, when you'll truly feel sorry." With a puzzled look, he walked away. But he heard her murmur under her breath. "He's the killer."
Looking back, he saw her close the book on the twelfth or so page. "Who is?" he asked. "Of course, the best friend." She said, looking back at him. He stared back into her gray eyes with his own. "How do you figure that?" he asked. He had, of course, read the book before. Bringing justice, in books, had amused him. He was surprised that she had guessed it only a few pages in. "Well, for a few reasons. They lived in the same house, but in different wings. He excused the maid for the night-" "But, he could have done it as a sign of good gesture." Richard cut in. "Yes, that could be true. And he had also told the maid that he'd be in most the night anyways. So, when she left, he committed the murder.  When they found the body, he had been able to slip out the back of the house after killing the man. He did spend most the night out, getting drunk. He'd found a way around everything so that he could walk back to the house in the morning with a hangover and wouldn't be questioned. It's also obvious that he didn't spend the night with a friend's so they couldn't say anything against him." She explained, taking a chocolate bar from her pocket and began nibbling it.
He blinked in surprise, again shocked by her deducting skills. "Alright, then why did he do it?" "Easy, in friendships like these, the victim was a wealthy man with lots of land. Since he wasn't married or had any children, was a single child, he signed all his things on his Will to be given to his friend. Another tip with helping the murder was that the Will was official only a week after the murder." She said, taking a chunk of chocolate off the bar. All of a sudden, Richard began to laugh. She only stared blankly. "What's so funny?" she asked. Calming his giggles, he smiled to her. 'That's correct, exactly. Man, you could be a detective." He said sweetly. She offered him a small smile. "Yes, I know. Thank you."
They have been friends since that time.
