Lana sat in the back of the black car as it sat in the parking lot. She just sat there, chewing on her thumbnail in a nervous fashion. "Lana, are you alright?" Micheal asked from the front seat. She brought her tired eyes up to look at the rear view mirror and lock her eyes with his green ones. "Yes, I'm fine. Just thinking as usual. I have a lot on my plate Micheal. I'll leave now. Pick up, same time as usual." She said as she got out, again sitting in the awkward way as before. She shut the door and began up towards the entrance to her high school. She was wearing regular denim jeans, a white short sleeved shirt and beaten up tennis shoes, if anyone paid attention people would notice she never wore socks with them.
This girl, who was a senior at this school, always had something on her plate. She had millions of different things to worry about, but never did. "Lana!" Turning around, she let a smile come to her face as she saw her one and only friend. He waved and she waved back. "Sorry I'm late Lana." He said, panting as he stood next to her. "You aren't late Richard. I just got here." She said sweetly.
Richard looked up at her and smiled. Any and every kid at their high school called her strange. She had this whole tired and uncaring look and yet she scored highest in the classes along with himself. He had never really cared how she looked, they had been friends since they were both younger. He knew she had only her dad, Micheal, and never had known her own mother. They walked in together, their talking mixing in with the sounds of the high school's hallway. "Oh, hey, look at this." Richard pulled the newspaper from his bag and handed it to her. She grabbed the edges with her middle fingers and thumb and read as they walked.
"Hm, interesting. Great that the man was brought down." She said, folding the paper and handing it back. He took it then looked at her. "Didn't you read about L solving it?" He asked. She nodded. "Of course I did, and?" She asked. "Well, I mean…" He trailed off, thinking she'd be a little more excited than that. But then again she never really showed much emotion. "It's not a surprise that he got into it, millions of dollars were at stake and more then ten people were killed. Those are L's terms." She said. "It's just stupid Lana. Why does he have to hide his face, why cant he solve the cases out in the open? He hides his voice and face. And he should be solving every case, instead of only the few." Richard grunted, putting the paper back.
"Well, you have to think Richard, he must have dozens of different cases worldwide so he cant work on all the little ones or else it could overload the poor man. Plus he does it for protection, I can understand why he would." Lana explained, stopping to slip the lollipop out of her pocket and unwrapped it. "Your sweet tooth acting up again?" He asked. No matter how old they got together, he would never get over how much sugar she would eat and never seemed to gain a pound. "Mhm." She answered as she put the sucker in her mouth. "Well, still, he is no better than the police. He should be helping out even the little people." He sighed. "And he should be in danger just like everyone else in the world." He said.
Lana took out another sucker and handed it to him. He only stared at it. "It's cherry." She said, moving it left and right, smiling as she tested him. His eyes darted away as he took the candy from her and ate it. They both laughed until the bell rang. "Crap. Always when I start eating the candy." With another laugh, he ate what he could before tossing it away along with Lana's. "Later Lana." Richard said, waving as he ran down the hall. Lana sighed and entered into her classroom. She sat and as soon as the bell rang, she blanked out with other things in front of her.

In his classroom, Richard sat at his desk and listened to the mindless chatter and conversation of the kids, sitting in their desks or in the chairs. The teacher hadn't arrived yet so the kids were doing as they please.
"-so were going to the arcade this-"
"-and then he said he didn't like it but then I-"
He sighed then put his head to the desk, a groan escaping him. He had to listen to this idiotic chatter all the time. He turned his head over with a tired look but then shot it up when something caught his eyes. He looked back to the other kids who weren't paying attention. He stood and went to the window. Something small and black was falling from the sky. He blinked as he watched it, watching it hit the ground. It looked really small from the distance. "What…the hell?" "Alright kids, take your seats." He looked back at the teacher then at the object. He didn't want to take his eyes off it, he wanted to get it before anyone else could.
He sat through class and just stared at it all through the class. When the bell finally rang for second period, he ran out of the class and to where he saw it fall. He had thought someone would've taken it by now but he breathed out in relief as he saw it sitting there. He stood and only stared at it for the longest time, he didn't want to pick it up for a reason he didn't know. But, hesitantly, he swiped it from the ground. It was made what seemed to be like leather. On the covers, indented white words spelled out Death Note. He could only stare before flipping through the pages. An ordinary journal? But then he saw the black pages at the front.
"How to Use?" He shook his head, putting the book in his bag. Making sure it was safely tucked away, he ran to find Lana so they could talk before second period. He had no intentions of showing her.
